In the Big Scary U, we get a glimpse into exactly how Gregory betrayed Maggie, but he also finds his motives being questioned by Negan. Rick and Daryl have a heated discussion while they try to recover the guns from the Savior’s truck that they caused to crash. Dwight and Eugene have a private discussion about being suspects in the attack. More importantly, The Big Scary U also finally gives us an answer to the question of what happened to Gabriel after he found himself stuck in that trailer with Negan.

The Big Scary U (S8 Episode 5)
In a flashback before the attack, Simon serves Gregory breakfast as he thanks him for giving them the information about Rick’s plans. Gregory is nervous while telling Simon of the groups plans, but he is assured that he is doing the right thing. Later on, Gregory is at a table with Negan, Simon, Eugene, Dwight, and others. Dwight is isn’t interested in listening to what Gregory has to say, and gets up to have a smoke. Gregory is tells Negan he can stop “it” before it starts by exiling any of his people who take up arms. Negan questions whether he is still their guy and if so, why he didn’t know about the Widow’s plans.
Negan accuses him of playing both sides, but Gregory says he inadvertently let a fox in his henhouse, but now that he knows he did, he will fix it. Simon suggests killing anyone at the hilltop who won’t fall in line. Surprisingly, Negan blows up and tells them that people are resources and are their foundations. Negan’s plan is to take the Rick, the Widow, and King “Assface”, and kill them publicly. As he finishes, Rick’s attack begins.

Back to after the present time with Negan and Gabriel in the trailer. Negan takes out his gun and sits on Gabriel. After a moment, he relents and helps him up. They sit quietly as they wait for the walkers to give up. Negan tells him there is a big difference between killing someone and getting someone killed. Negan mentions that he used to help people, and then asks Gabriel why he stopped to save Gregory when all Gregory did was betray him. Gabriel says there has to be a reason, and maybe the reason is for him to take Negan’s confession.
While Negan and Gabriel are stuck in the trailer, Simon, Dwight, Eugene, and others are discussing their next steps in a meeting room inside the sanctuary. They know that Negan may be dead, and they also know there is a traitor in their midst. Dwight changes the subject because he knows that he is the one who did it. Eugene appears nervous as well because he know he will be suspected even though he is innocent. After the meeting, Eugene visits Dwight in his room to tell him thanks for supporting him in the meeting. He tells Dwight that he knows he is prime suspect, and he is glad Dwight is on his side.
Gabriel asks Negan how he helped people before this new world came into existence. He explains that he helped kids by guiding them into becoming good adults. Negan says that he turned his weakness into strength and took its place. He tells Gabriel he is going to help him find his purpose and make him strong too. Gabriel confess to him that he has killed. In fact, he was part of the first attack on his outpost.
Gabriel presses Negan to tell him how he is weak again… to confess because they may die soon. He then asks about his wife and Negan is clearly bothered by it. While he is thinking, Gabriel grabs his gun and runs into another room. Negan tells him it is time to go. He pulls in a walker, and tears it apart so they can cover themselves with its insides and start making their way inside.
