Carol of course is on her own mission to save the day without any help, and Rick and Daryl swoop in help the team just in time. This week’s did progress the story a lot, but it gave us an in-depth look at character who was a mystery to us. Below is our recap of Some Guyspoilers follow…

Some Guy (S8, Episode 4)

Some Guy opens with a flashback of Ezekiel getting ready for battle as other members of the Kingdom say goodbye to their loved ones. They begin to head out on their journey when Ezekiel turns back to tell a young Kingdom boy to be brave. He then addresses the rest of the group telling them that they are doing this because their way of life hangs in the balance. Their King tells them they are walking into danger but they will win.  He is full of confidence as he reinforces his message by repeating, “and yet I smile” after nearly every sentence.

Flash forward to their current situation, and we are given a view of the field where his squad has just been slaughtered. Ezekiel claws his way out from beneath several dead Kingdom members. He flips his people over one by one seeing who has not made it until he cannot take it any longer and screams in agony. Then the dead start to awaken, and begin moving toward him. His leg is hurt, and he is scooting away along the ground as they close in on him. He takes a gun from a yet to awaken body to use as a crutch but he falls down. More downed men are awakening and closing in around him when one of the surviving members comes to his rescue.

Ezekiel and Alvaro are making their way through the field when a man shoots Alvaro out of nowhere and forces Ezekiel to go with him at gunpoint. The man takes the blade out of Ekekial’s cane and tells him that he is taking him to the Sanctuary.  Ezekiel is still struggling to walk with his injury.  He falls down and refuses to get up as the man taunts him and forces him to stand up while the walkers close in.  The man continues to taunt Ezekiel, but now its about Shiva. He tells the man the story of how he lucked in to Shiva, and admits that he is just a meaningless con man.

Gunshots ring out and distract the man. Ezekiel takes advantage of this as he grabs his sword back and stabs him, but not very deep and his injury prevents him from finishing the job. The man pulls the knife out then puts blood on Ezekial’s face like warpaint. The man and Ezekiel have run into a locked fence with the walkers still closing in. They have nowhere to go now and the man decides to kill Ezekiel instead and save himself. As he raises his sword to strike, Jerry appears and gruesomely cuts him in half with his axe.  Finally… we got to Jerry do some damage with that battle axe!  Ezekiel tells Jerry he doesn’t need to call him your majesty any longer to which Jerry replies, “Dude, yes I do!”

While Ezekiel has been struggling to get away, Carol has been in the tower where the shots that took down their squad were being fired from. Negan’s men are inside packing up the 50-caliber Brownings. Carol sneaks up close to where they are and hides in the ceiling. She then shoots through the ceiling and takes out all five men nearly at once as they carry the cases of guns through the hall.  More men come running at the sound of the gunshots and she flees the room unnoticed before they arrive.

Carol is able to silently follow behind the remaining men as they move the guns outside. They have just loaded the guns into a truck when Carol begins attacking them. She fires and then takes cover behind a truck. She is outnumbered as they fire back littering the truck with bullets, but this Carol we’re talking about.

The men stop firing and start to advance on Carol. She throws a handgun out and pretends to surrender. They tell her to stand still, and she does saying she is unarmed. Carol lets one of the men get close and then takes him hostage. The other men shoot and Carol uses this as a distraction to open the gate behind them with a button to let the walkers in behind the men.

As Carol is gaining the advantage over Negan’s men, the walkers have closed in on Ezekiel and Jerry and they begin fighting them off. They are too many though, and they know they will not last. Jerry thanks Ezekiel for “Being such a cool dude,” just as Carol sees that they are being overrun by walkers.

They are exhausted and are about to give up as Carol makes the choice to save them, but at the cost of letting the men escape. She lets them through the gate as she watched the men escape the complex with the gun, but then she hears Daryl’s motorcycle and knows he and Rick are on their tail.

Daryl is on his motorcycle and Rick is in a Jeep as they chase the truck. The men start firing the 50-caliber and Daryl skids out. Rick still follows closely though in what is apparently an invincible Jeep. The truck has to swerve to miss a walker in the road and knocks the shooter in the back of the truck off balance, but he recovers and hits Rick’s engine just as Daryl rides back up and takes him out. Rick pulls beside the cab of the truck, jumps in like Indiana Jones, and knocks the guy out of the truck, but he is unable to control it as it  runs off the road and down a hill. Daryl runs up to see the car on its side, but Rick was thrown clear and is safe of course.

Ezekiel, Carol, and Jerry are making their way out of the area, but Ezekiel is losing his strength. He wants them to leave him, because there are walkers closing in on them but they refuse. As they walk through the forest, they run into some walkers trapped down in a ravine. They go down in it, and fight several of them but they are having trouble getting out. Ezekiel says for them to leave him again, and Jerry says he can’t leave his king. Ezekiel screams at him and says he is not his king… he is just some guy. As he does, Shiva comes in to save them, but it is short-lived as he is overtaken by walkers and killed. Noooo!!!!! Ezekiel is distraught.

They make it back to the Kingdom safely. The sight of the three of them walking in alone is heartbreaking to everyone. A boy comes up to Ezekiel, but he doesn’t say anything… he just walks silently by the gathered crowd.

Some Guy focuses on Ezekiel and how he became the person he is today.  In one flashback during the episode, Carol and Ezekiel talking before the battle. Ezekiel is telling Carol about willing himself into the warrior he needs to be. He says he is just a zookeeper (just some guy), and tells of the story of saving Shiva. Hesitation filled his body, but he decided that he wanted to be one who leads so he jumped in the cage. He says that now he has finally decided to be to try to be a hero. Ezekiel asks if she has always been the way she is or if she decided too. She says she decided to… just like him.
