TWD: Carl Leaves With “Honor”

Is it just me, or is every blog and website really mad that Carl is dead? I have read a lot of “I’m done with this show” reviews, and I can’t help but wonder if there is anything these writers enjoy anymore. I thought Carl’s last appearance in Honor was a fitting end for a character that we have known since he was a young boy. I’m not glad that Carl is dead, but I am glad that he died in a way that allowed him to say goodbye to his loved ones. He was able to enjoy some tender last moments with sister, his best friend, and his father, which is a lot more than most characters on the show get (I’m talking about you Glenn). Our recap of Honor is below…

Honor (S8, Episode 9)

Honor begins with the vision we have seen hints of throughout the season. This time, old man Rick and Judith are walking through a garden where they stop to talk to Jerry and Siddiq. The vision is short lived and we are shown what appears to be Rick and Michonne appear to be digging a grave.

The next thing we see is how Carl was bitten. He was bitten while helping Siddiq fight off walkers. When they get back to Alexandria, he helps Siddiq into the sewer pipe then he goes to his house to examine his wound in the bathroom. This is where you realize what a good actor Chandler Riggs has become. He is able to tell us exactly what Carl is feeling without uttering a word. You can see the fear and realization wash over his face followed by peaceful acceptance as he dresses his wound and goes back outside.

Carl asks the guard where his dad and Michonne are… he wants to tell them what happened. Shortly after he finds a note that she has left him a note saying she had to go see for herself. He retreats to his room to write goodbye notes to all of them. In the meantime, he continues to help Siddiq get settled underground with food and a bed. He enjoys the little time he has with Judith outside. Michonne finally returns as Carl appears to have accepted his fate with honor.

Honor finds Morgan silently scoping out the Sanctuary. He sees Saviors start shooting walkers from the inside. He realizes they are making a path as more Saviors pour out of the bottom floor and start firing on his elevated position. He runs downstairs to make his escape then lures several walkers close to him just in time as the Saviors come out of a door to get him. He escapes through the woods just as Gavin and the Saviors heading to the Kingdom pass by.

Carol and the Kingdom survivors are walking through the woods. She is leading them to her house so they can be safe while she searches for Ezekiel. Henry wants to come with her, but she refuses.

Rick and Michonne are examining Carl’s wound underneath Alexandria. Rick is having trouble processing it. Carl’s weakness is showing as he hands his letters to Michonne to hold. Rick tries to blame it on the Saviors, but Carl tells him that he got bit bringing Siddiq back. Explosions can be heard overhead as they talk.

Gavin is telling Ezekiel that Negan is going to kill him, and he can’t stop it. Ezekiel tells that what happens to him doesn’t matter because he freed his people. Gavin tells Ezekiel how much he liked him because he actually got it… until Rick came along. Ezekiel tells him that he made a choice he could live with and its his turn to do the same.

Morgan is sneaking in the Kingdom and comes across Carol just after he sees Henry sneak inside. He tells her they can take the Saviors holding Ezekiel. He tells her Henry is in the Kingdom too. They go off to try to get their friends back.

In the tunnel, Rick and Michonne try to make Carl comfortable. Siddiq offers them anti-inflammatory pills to help ease Carl’s pain. Siddiq tells them he was a resident doctor. Rick asks Carl if he knew Siddiq was a doctor. Carl just says that Siddiq wasn’t going to make it alone. As bombs continue to go off above, dust falls on Carl’s face and he begins coughing. Michonne slams Dwight against the wall and begs him to have the Saviors make it stop. He tells her that he can’t.

Rosita asks Dwight if the Hilltop is safe. She wants to take Carl there. Dwight says they need to stay put until the Saviors are gone… he says they are almost done, and that they don’t have the ammo to keep it up. If they leave now, the Saviors will be looking for them in the woods. Dwight is not sure they should all be in the same place together at the Hilltop. Daryl responds that “we’ll be their worst damn nightmare.”

Carol and Morgan continue to sneak through the Kingdom and find the Saviors trying to put out Ezekiel’s fire. The decide they need to take them out. They take the first two out quietly, and then the next two when they come running out of the building. On the other side of the Kingdom, Gavin asks Ezekiel if its going to go bad. He tells him that it is up to him.

Carl is getting worse as he tells Michonne she looks great. He says its not supposed to be like this and he knows he can be better. They hear the saviors leaving, and Daryl hands Judith to Rick so he can go take a look.

Carol and Morgan continue through the Kingdom when they hear more voices. Carol says to leave it, but Morgan goes anyway. He quickly takes out two of the three Saviors and Carol takes out the last. Back on the other side, Ezekiel has been loaded in a truck. Gavin is clearly bothered by having to take Ezekiel to Negan. He tells Ezekiel he doesn’t like it. Ezekiel tells him it is not too late to walk it back. Gavin tries to radio his men, but no one is there. Ezekiel tells him again it is not too late. Then they hear gunfire and move Ezekiel inside. Morgan and Carol come up right behind where they just were.

Back under Alexandria, Michonne is talking about getting Carl to the Hilltop, but Rick tells her that he won’t make it. He can’t leave the tunnel, and Rick says he is going to stay with him. Michonne says that she will stay too, but he says she needs to take Judith. Darryl says he will take her and keep her safe. Carl sits up to say goodbye to her. He tells Judith that sometimes kids have to show their parents the way. He gives her his hat. He says it always kept dad with him and made him feel as strong as him. He says that before his mom died she said he would beat this world. He says he didn’t but she will.

Daryl tells Carl that he is the one who saved all the people and leaves with Judith. Siddiq tells him that he has given him a chance and that he can never repay him, but he can honor him by showing his family and friends that what he did meant something.

The Saviors have brought Ezekiel inside his theater. Gavin tells him that he is who he is and he can’t be someone else. Ezekiel says he realizes that he was saving Gavin’s life, but no more. An explosion goes off and several Saviors are taken out. Gavin tells them to give up or Ezekiel’s dead. Carol and Morgan emerge from behind the damage and start taking them out.

Ezekiel grabs a gun on the floor and begins to help. One of them tackles Morgan and is beating him up until Morgan reaches inside an open wound and, in one of the most gruesome displays on the show thus far, pulls his guts out while he is still alive. Gavin, the only remaining survivor, is shocked. He tries to run and just makes it out the door as Morgan fires at him. Ezekiel says they should take their leave, but Morgan says, “We don’t need to go. All of them are dead”. He has apparently lost his honor and can only think about revenge.

Gavin is trying to escape the building as Morgan calmly pursues him. Morgan comes right up to the building where Gavin is hiding, but then he turns. Gavin thinks he is safe until Morgan pulls him out of the back of the building. Gavin tells him that he kept his word to Ezekiel. He tells Morgan that he thinks he can beat Negan, but he can’t. Gavin tells him that killing him won’t make any of it go away.

Ezekiel tells Morgan that ending him is the cowards way… that Gavin will see what he has wrought. Carol pleads with Morgan to stop… to remember that he told her they can be better than them. He says he has to do it as Henry suddenly stabs Gavin through the throat from behind. Ezekiel tells Henry is is ok, and Henry says “I had to” just like Morgan did.

Rick and Michonne are tending to Carl, who is barely hanging on. He tells Michonne that he doesn’t want her to be sad. He wants her to be strong for his dad, for Judith, and for herself. He tells her she is his best friend, and she says he is her’s too. A candle blows out in the distance. Rick says they should get him out of there.

They take him out of the tunnel until he tells them he can’t make it any further so they take him inside one the few remaining buildings in Alexandria, which happens to be the church. They lay Carl down and he thanks them for getting him “here”. He means that he thanks for getting him this far in life. He tells Rick what while they were in the prison and were attacked that there was a kid younger than him with a gun. He says the kid started to put the gun down, but then he shot him. He says it was so easy to kill him.

Rick tells him that he just a boy when he had to do those things. Carl tells him that he saw how easy it got to kill. He says that Rick changed when he brought them all together at the prison. He put his gun away for Carl so he could become who he is. He tells him it was the right thing to do and it still is. He tells him he can be like that again. Rick says he can’t be who he was.

Carl says he can’t kill all of the Saviors because there has to be something after. Carl says he understands how Rick can’t see it yet, but he tells him that he has. Then he describes the visions we think that Rick has been having. He tells him that’s how it could be if Rick can still be who he was that time at the prison. Rick tells him that it was all for him from the start. Everything he did was for him and Judith. Carl says he wants the vision to be true for his dad. Rick promises that he will make it real.

Rick tells Carl he is sorry that he couldn’t protect him. Carl reaches for his gun and Rick says no. Carl tells them that he can do it himself… he says that he has to do it. He tells Michonne and his dad they he loves them. Rick kisses his forehead and says he will make the vision real. Rick and Michonne go outside and we hear a gunshot as Carl ends it. Rick and Michonne bury him outside the church.

In our last view of Carl’s vision, Judith sees Negan in the garden and he says, “Good Morning to you darlin.” Apparently, Carl believed everyone had some honor in them.
