The Far Cry series has taken us all over the earth to both fictional and real places. It is known for its vast landscapes, crafting mechanics, and its lawless frontiers. While none of the game’s stories are directly connected, they are all part of the same fictional universe. The settings have taken us to a string of islands called Micronesia, the African savannah, unnamed islands in the Pacific, the country of Kyrat in the Himalayas, and even back to the stone age. However, Far Cry 5 is bringing us back from the exotic locations to modern day fictional Hope County, Montana where a doomsday cult has taken over and is threatening its citizens quiet way of life.
The cult is called The Project at Eden’s Gate and is led by “The Father” Joseph Seed and his children. The cult is trying to forcefully impose their religious beliefs on the citizens of Hope County. Our arrival in Hope County spurs a conflict that causes Eden’s Gate to seize control of the region, and kidnap or kill the areas residents. We must spark a resistance to overtake Eden’s Gate and regain control of the region.
As with previous games in the series, Far Cry 5 is an open sandbox game allowing the player to freely roam of all Hope County’s beautiful landscapes. Speaking of the landscapes, they appear to be meticulously crafted with swaying foliage, detailed structures, and of course, an abundance of large animals to plow into you when you are just trying to find materials to craft with. Ubisoft also boasts that it will include the largest customizable weapons and vehicles roster to date.
I have to admit that while I love Far Cry 4, I get a little fatigued playing it because it seems like there is always a rhino or some other large animal that comes out of nowhere to slaughter me from behind as I am in the middle of a mission. Needless to say but, I am welcoming the change of setting to North America. At least I might stand a chance against a bear or a bull…
Far Cry 5 will be released on February 27, 2018. You can preorder your copy from Amazon or Gamestop.
